How to cope with bed rest

Not very many pregnant women dream about being put on bed rest, although I am pretty sure there are a few who wish for it not knowing what it really entails. No matter how you look at it, bed rest is usually ordered because of some complication in your pregnancy, which can include preeclampsia and contractions. Despite how inconvenient bed rest is, doctors only issue it to help protect your baby. Bed rest is designed to keep your baby inside the womb for as long as possible.

Now just because your doctor has put you on bed rest that doesn’t mean that you have to lie around in bed all day doing nothing. After all, even though you are on bed rest that doesn’t mean your life is over, you just need to go about your life differently. Here are some things that you can do to help cope with bed rest.

Number One: Stay Connected
Perhaps one of the worst things about bed rest is the isolation, everybody else you know will be able to come and go as they please. In order to get through bed rest, especially if you have other children to attend to, you are going to need to stay connected to your family and friends. Just because you are feeling isolated doesn’t mean you need to be. If your family and friends are not aware of what is going on then they won’t know that you need help. Make sure you are open and honest with them about what is going on and take them up on any offers of help. Call up your friends; ask them to come over to visit, or even join online support groups.

Number Two: Work From Home
Not all workplaces will allow you to work from home, but you won’t know if you don’t ask. However, before you ask if you can work from home you must clear it with your doctor. Now some positions, such as a cashier, are not work from home friendly, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t something else available. Talk to your boss and see if your position is something that can be done at home, even on a part-time basis or if not if there is something else that you can do while on bed rest. If all else fails you can often find other telecommuting and freelance positions available online.

Number Three: Get Some “Me” Time
Now obviously this isn’t going to work as well if you have young children in the home, but it still can be done. Use this time as a way to catch up on some of your favorite shows, watch movies you have been meaning to watch or even read some books that you have been putting on hold. If this is your first pregnancy be aware once the baby is born your “me” time is going to be drastically reduced! You can even use this time to do some research on what to expect during your pregnancy or labor or even the first year.

Number Four: Pamper Yourself
Sitting in bed all day long for months on end can be devastating to how a woman views herself. Many women often think there is no point in getting up and ready for the day as they are stuck in bed all day anyway. Having this kind of attitude is not good for anybody. To help feel better about yourself you need to pamper yourself a little bit. Instead of going out to the nail salon, find somebody who will come to your home to do your nails and throw in a pedicure while you are at it!

Being put on bed rest can be hard, but you have to remember to make the best of it. Keep in mind that your doctor is only putting you on bed rest to help you and your baby. Keeping your baby’s health in mind is often the only motivation a mother needs!
